Washington State car insurance laws mandate minimum liability car insurance requirements however there are also many exceptions to the law. For example, if you own a motorcycle, classic car or even a moped you may very well not be subject to having to purchase mandatory auto insurance.
Driving with no insurance is NEVER a smart decision but if you do own any type of vehicle outside of typical private passenger cars then contact the Washington State DMV (the Washington State Department of Licensing is its formal name) to see how WA car insurance laws apply to you.
Washington State Car Insurance Requirements
Auto insurance laws in Washington State require drivers to carry minimum levels of liability insurance or be subject to fines and possible suspension of both vehicle registration tags and driving privileges. Washington State minimum liability requirements currently (2010) are:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability for accidents with one injured person
- $50,000 combined bodily injury liability per accident (all persons)
- $10,000 in property damage liability coverage
Washington State only requires liability insurance which means you will have no coverage for damages to your vehicle or injuries sustained by you in a car accident where you were deemed at-fault. Almost all states only have liability insurance requirements and while having this coverage will certainly prevent you from being fined for driving with no insurance it should never be considered as any type of full coverage in the event of an accident.
Washington Car Insurance Companies
With over 130 car insurance companies in Washington State drivers certainly have many options for a quality auto insurer. While many of the national insurers such as Geico, Progressive and State Farm have a large presence there are also many local and regional auto insurers who serve a substantial piece of the marketplace. The PEMCO Car Insurance Company is a prime example of a superb local insurer who has no presence outside of a particular state but within the borders of Washington is extremely well respected and commands a much larger market share than almost all of the national brands.
Car insurance comparison means doing your homework. Most states have well over 100 licensed auto insurers and Washington state is no different but the only way to find the best car insurance coverage for you and your family will be to learn about coverage and take the time for a good comparison search.
