What might be more surprising is the number of people that have given the little reptile his iconic sound. The role of the friendly gecko has seen quite a few voice actors, all giving him that iconic Cockney accent.
Find out who is the voice of the GEICO Gecko below.
How did GEICO create the Gecko advertising campaign?
Back in 1999 when a Screen Actors Guild strike was in place, the Martin Agency created the original Gecko as part of an advertising campaign commissioned by GEICO.
The terms of the Screen Actors Guild strike prevented any “human actors” from working in commercials so with an advertising budget to blow, and a brand to build, the Martin agency decided to use animation and create a cute little green character as the GEICO spokesperson.
The Gecko campaign was initially launched using a specific Cockney English accent for the character pleading with viewers to stop calling him GEICO as he was a gecko.
Between the loveable creature created, the funny British accent, and an entirely new approach to sell car insurance, the Gecko campaign was a smash hit landing a place in the history books of advertising campaigns.
