When shopping for the best car insurance, it’s important to consider a number of factors. For example, you probably want a policy that will provide the right amount of coverage that you can afford. For many people, however, one of the most important factors when searching for a car insurance company is the length of the policy.

What car insurance companies offer 12-month policies? Does Geico do 12-month policies? Do you need a six-month “starter” policy or do you prefer a 12-month policy that gives you the option to renew or cancel at the end of every year? These may be only a few of the questions you’ll be asking. Read this guide to find out what you need to know about 12-month policies.

Before learning what car insurance companies offer 12-month policies, use your ZIP code to get a free quote to see how much you might pay for a 12-month policy.

Finding 12-Month Car Insurance Policies

Since a car insurance company’s job is to assess how much risk you pose for filing a future claim, they may take advantage of providing you a six-month policy period until you can prove yourself as not only a good driver, but a loyal customer.

Many companies will automatically renew your car insurance every six months and often big brand insurance companies such as Geico and Allstate will offer good driver discounts, even though they may keep you at six-month intervals. What is the good driver discount? Drivers who don’t get into accidents can receive deals on their policy ratel

Although the price isn’t much different whether you are locked in a six-month policy or a 12-month policy, car insurance companies regularly evaluate your risk as a driver to give themselves the opportunity to raise or lower your rates and cancel or continue your coverage based on your driving safety and skill.

This is one reason finding a one-year car insurance policy can be difficult; because your rates are locked in for a year, companies have to wait longer before they can adjust them again.

Buying auto insurance on a 12-month policy may be difficult, as the industry standard is a six-month auto insurance policy, but it’s not impossible. So what auto insurance companies offer 12-month policies? Read through the next few sections to find out.

Which car insurance companies offer 12-month policies?

We’ve already discussed that finding car insurance for 12 months in a single policy is not standard, and is sometimes difficult to find. For example, Geico auto policy quotes are only available for a six-month duration. And an Amica six-month policy will be your only option in the near future, as they are phasing out their 12-month policies. However, we have a list of some of the companies that do offer them, which include:

  • Aviva
  • Erie
  • Infinity
  • Liberty Mutual
  • MetLife
  • SafeCo
  • The General
  • The Hartford
  • USAA

It is important to note that in many cases, there are limitations on the 12-month policies offered by these companies, including that they’re often not available in every state. Additionally, some companies have specific requirements you must meet to be insured by them.

For example, you’re probably already aware that USAA only covers members of the military and their families. Another example is The Hartford, which only insures drivers who are 55 and older.

We’ll go into a little more detail on the 12-month policies for a few of these companies below.

USAA 12-Month Car Insurance Policies

USAA car insurance has been a trustworthy company for many U.S. families for decades and provides the convenience of 12-month policies as well as many other policy options.

USAA offers car drivers the opportunity for not only an extended policy but many other discounts to reward preferred drivers. Customers who sign on for a 12-month policy will receive excellent customer service, which will be readily available whenever they need it, including when they’re involved in an accident or have questions about their claims or policy.

Customer reviews of the company speak for themselves and often provide in-depth descriptions of being insured with USAA. Not bad, considering many companies in the U.S. don’t offer the same kind of personalized treatment and care. USAA’s insurance is compatible with many people’s lifestyles and if you can prove you’re a preferred driver when you begin your policy, over time your policy is likely to decrease.

Aviva 12-Month Car Insurance Policies

Aviva is a competitive car insurance company claiming to offer some of the lowest car insurance rates available, but what makes them stand out is its car insurance 12-month policies. However, it’s important to note that not everyone qualifies for a 12-month policy.

When signing on for a policy, it’s important to have a clean driving record for the preceding three years — no DUIs or traffic violations, though accidents may be acceptable if you’re not at fault. However, if your driving record shows any at-fault accidents, this may be a concern.

The more accident-free your driving record is, the better chance you have of qualifying for a 12-month policy that best fits your lifestyle. Aviva also offers up to a 20 percent discount when you purchase your policy online.

The General 12-Month Car Insurance Policies

For anyone in the United States who has a less than flattering driving record and needs cheap insurance, the General Auto Insurance Company may be a perfect choice. The General car insurance company is also a great candidate for new drivers, any driver with a low credit score, or anyone with a lengthy history of accidents and traffic violations.

The General offers 12-month policies to many of its customers, as well as an easy way to pay through its website.

What will a 12-month policy cost?

In general, pricing for 12-month policies is the same as for six-month policies. For example, as we noted above, Amica is transitioning from 12-month policies to six-month policies, and they note specifically that the average rate will remain the same, despite the shorter policy term.

Take a look at this table to see average annual, bi-annual, and monthly rates for some of the major insurers in the country.

How to Get a Car Insurance Quote Online

You can get car insurance quotes from individual companies by reaching out to them directly. This may be necessary when shopping for 12-month auto insurance policies, since, as we’ve already discussed, they are not common.

Regardless of whether you choose a six-month or 12-month policy, you must purchase insurance of at least the minimum liability required in each state. Take a look at this video to learn a bit more about liability insurance.

You don’t want to be one of the 13 percent of drivers on the road who are currently uninsured (as reported by the Insurance Information Institute), so make sure you have enough coverage to be legal on the road, whether it’s through a six-month or 12-month policy.

Pros and Cons of 12-Month Car Insurance Policies

If you’re considering purchasing a 12-month auto insurance policy, it’s a good idea to consider the pros and cons and compare six-month vs. 12-month car insurance policies.

With a 12-month policy, your rates cannot change for a year (rather than the typical six months). This can be a pro or a con, depending on your unique situation. If you end up with a speeding ticket, accident, or other black marks on your driving record during the policy term, you have a longer period of time before your rates are increased as a result.

However, if something potentially beneficial to your rates (like points dropping off your driving record or an increase in your credit score) occurs during the policy term, by the same token, it will be longer before your rates can be reduced to reflect this.

With regard to pricing, as we already noted, a 12-month policy won’t necessarily save you any money over a six-month policy, either. Often, the rates are the same, or nearly so. As with auto insurance in general, your best bet is to shop around and compare rates to find the best pricing and coverage for your needs.

Only you can decide if a 12-month policy is for you, depending on your particular circumstances.

12-Month Car Insurance Policies: The Bottom Line

Finding a 12-month auto insurance policy may not be easy, but it’s possible. When shopping around for insurance, consider what is most important to you in a policy and weigh your options.

Is a longer policy the most important, or is price? If a 12-month policy is crucial, your best bet is to search for companies that offer those policies. Keep in mind that there are often requirements you’ll need to meet like a clean driving record in order to qualify.

Additionally, some of the companies that offer 12-month policies only do so in certain states, so you may need to speak to a licensed insurance agent to find out what’s available in your state.
