- Non-owner SR-22 insurance is for those who must carry this certificate but do not own a vehicle
- To qualify as a non-owner, you cannot own a vehicle or live in a household where a member owns a vehicle
- Non-owner SR-22 insurance policies are usually more affordable than standard SR-22 policies
It is a common misconception that an SR-22 is a type of insurance. Rather, it is a certificate that you must carry which proves you have proper insurance coverage required by law.
Not every car insurance company will insure a driver that has an SR-22 certificate. This can be a daunting experience while shopping around for coverage.
Although getting insurance coverage can be difficult while being required to hold an SR-22, it is not impossible.
Non-owner SR-22 insurance is a requirement you carry insurance whether you own a vehicle or not. This may seem unusual, but this type of policy covers you when you drive any vehicle.
This guide aims to equip you with the knowledge you need about basic SR-22 coverage and non-owner SR-22 coverage in 2022. You will also be given references to companies that offer non-owner SR-22 policies.
The Basics of SR-22 Insurance
SR-22 insurance coverage is required if you are issued an SR-22 certificate. An SR-22 certificate is issued by your state legal system, or by the DMV. The most common reasons for being required to carry this type of certificate is if you have been caught driving without a license, driving on a suspended license, or driving without insurance.
Once you have been issued an SR-22 certificate, you will be required to keep it on file for three to five years. Once your SR-22 filing period is over, you will have to request that your insurance company drop it from your policy. It does not automatically come off.
You may be required to file an SR-22 if you have been considered a high-risk driver.
Factors That Determine if You are a High-Risk Driver
There are several reasons why you may be considered a high-risk driver. These reasons include:
- One or more DWI/DUIs
- Multiple moving violations
- Too many violations in a short amount of time
- Not having enough insurance coverage (underinsured)
- Several at-fault accidents
Some lesser-known reasons that you may receive an SR-22 requirement are not paying state-ordered child support or driving with an amended license.
Do note that you will not receive an SR-22 for non-moving violations, such as parking tickets.

Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance Information
Non-owner SR-22 coverage is meant for drivers who are required to file an SR-22 but do not own a vehicle. If your license has been suspended, you may have to obtain a non-owner SR-22 policy to reinstate your driving privileges.
The reason non-owner SR-22 coverage is required even if you do not have a vehicle is due to the possibility that you may drive a rented or borrowed vehicle. This is an operator’s policy as opposed to actual vehicle coverage.
In order to be eligible for a non-owner SR-22 policy, you must meet these requirements:
- You do not own a vehicle
- You do not live in a home where someone owns a vehicle
- You are not required to use an ignition interlock device (read our full “What is an Ignition Interlock Device?” for more information)
The Type of Coverage a Non-Owner SR-22 Policy Provides
This type of policy provides coverage for damages caused to the other party’s property and their medical bills if you are in an accident. It does not cover any damages done to the vehicle you are driving, because non-owner SR-22 insurance is a secondary policy. The vehicle you are driving should be covered by insurance from the owner who provides their own liability, comprehensive, or collision coverage.
Any vehicle you drive will be covered by your non-owner SR-22 insurance policy. This is because it is an operator’s policy. However, it does not cover you if you drive a vehicle that is owned by a person in your household.
Cost of Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance
Typically, the cost of a non-owner SR-22 insurance policy is less than a standard SR-22 policy. This is because car insurance companies determine that you will not be driving nearly as much as an owner of a vehicle, or if you live with someone who owns a vehicle. Therefore, their risk is far less than a standard daily driver.
There are the basic filing fees associated with the SR-22 certificate that your insurance company may file for you and include in your yearly premium. This fee ranges from $15-$25 per filing year.
Non-owner SR-22 policy premiums average anywhere from $600 per year, all the way up to $2,600 per year, depending on your age, location, credit score, and the nature and count of how many infractions are on your record.
It is important to make sure that you never lapse in paying your policy. If you do lapse on your policy, it will be reported to the DMV and your license will get suspended.

Wrapping up About Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance in 2022
It can be difficult to obtain an insurance policy when you have to file an SR-22, but insurance companies that do write the policies are more likely to insure a non-owner SR-22 holder. This is due to the fact that there is less risk associated with a person that does not own a vehicle or live in a household where someone owns a vehicle.
The basic reasons you may have to hold an SR-22 certificate is because you were caught driving on a suspended license, you’ve had one or more DUI or DWIs, or you’ve had too many moving violations in a short amount of time.
A non-owner SR-22 insurance policy will cover you if you drive any vehicle, such as borrowing a friend’s car or renting a car. It will not cover you if you are driving a vehicle that is owned by someone residing in your household.
The policy will only cover the other party’s vehicle and injuries if you are in an accident. This is because it is a secondary, operator-only policy. The vehicle you are driving should have the mandatory minimum liability insurance in place.
Make sure to pay your policy every month on time. If you don’t, your insurance company will report the lapse to the DMV, and suspend your license.
Although it can be hard to find an insurance company that insures high-risk drivers, there are a handful of good companies out there, including Progressive Insurance, Anchor General, and Infinity Auto.
