Here's what you should know...
  • When you sign up for an auto insurance policy, you typically receive an insurance card as proof of insurance in the mail. This will list all of the relevant information about your auto insurance company
  • If you lost your auto insurance card or do not have a current one, you can contact the department of motor vehicles for your state to find out the insurance information that is on file for you
  • If you find out that your auto insurance coverage is not current, you should make sure to get at least the required minimum coverage as soon as possible. This is a requirement under state laws

Finding out information about who your current auto insurance company is can be fairly easy. The best case scenario is that you have your proof of insurance card either saved in your wallet or in your vehicle. If you cannot find your proof of insurance card, the department of motor vehicles or the department of insurance for your state may be your next best bet.

Whenever you sign up for an auto insurance policy, the insurance company will mail you an insurance certificate or physical proof of insurance. Under the laws of some states, it is mandatory that you keep a copy of your proof of insurance on you at all times when driving.

In the event that you cannot find a copy of your current proof of insurance, once you find out who your current auto insurance company is, you will want to request an additional copy as soon as possible.

There should not be any fee associated with you requesting an additional insurance card or certificate from your auto insurance company.

If there is, you may want to check with your state department of insurance to see if this is a violation of your rights as a consumer of auto insurance.

The reason this is important is because you could face some serious and expensive penalties if you are pulled over by a law enforcement officer or are involved in an auto accident and are unable to produce physical proof of insurance.

Some of the penalties under state law for failure to produce proof of insurance when asked include the suspension or revocation of your driver’s license, fees, impoundment of your car and even jail time in very serious cases. The penalties you could face become much worse with each repeat offense.

Another place that you may have an indication of your current insurance provider is in your emails. Many auto insurance companies offer emailed or online statements for your premiums. A search of your email inbox for car insurance could be a good place to start in tracking that information down.

In addition, you may also have a record of payment of your current premium in your bank statements. If you keep past statements or use online banking, you could do a search to see if there are any auto insurance companies that you have sent a payment to recently.

If you find the name of the insurance company, you can search online for the main phone number of the auto insurance company for your state. They will be able to connect you with your specific auto insurance agent to answer any questions about your existing policy.

Your State Department of Insurance or Department of Motor Vehicles

Because almost every state requires some level of auto liability coverage, many of them also have requirements for insurance companies to update the department of motor vehicles of any changes in the insurance status of registered drivers in that state. It is very likely that you will be able to find out at least the name of your current insurance provider from your state department of motor vehicles.

If you call this department for your state, be prepared to be able to answer questions about your personal information, such as your driver’s license number, license tag number, and vehicle registration information. This will help the representative verify the state of your current auto insurance coverage.

If you happen to find out from your state department of motor vehicles that your auto insurance coverage is not up to date, then you need to act immediately to fix this. You could be hit with very expensive fines for not carrying at least the minimum amount of auto insurance coverage.

If you need to shop around for insurance quotes at that point, be sure to check into optional coverages above the minimum required amount. This is a good idea because many accidents involve damage that far exceeds the policy limits of a basic auto liability policy. You should also ask about any discounts that you may qualify for so that you can reduce the amount of your premium as much as possible.

In sum, it should not be very difficult at all or take up too much time for you to find out information on your current auto insurance provider. There is a very good chance that you have this information in your personal records at home, including from your current insurance card or certificate and your bank statements for payments. If you cannot find this information at home, you may be able to request it formally from the department of motor vehicles or the department of insurance for your state.
