Missouri Car Insurance Requirements

The Missouri Department of Revenue administers Missouri car insurance laws and both the Missouri DMV and law enforcement officials have the right to request proof of insurance.

Currently (2010) any vehicles registered in Missouri must carry auto insurance with at least the following minimum coverage:

Liability Insurance

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per accident per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident for all persons
  • $10,000 property damage liability

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

  • $25,000 UIM liability per accident per person
  • $50,000 UIM liability per accident for all persons

While most states require liability car insurance, uninsured motorist coverage is only needed for a few.

UIM coverage is essential to have as it can cover auto theft, hit and run accidents and protect you in cases when the party at fault does not have enough insurance coverage to pay for all the damages.

Whether you live in Missouri or not uninsured motorist coverage is a precious part of any car insurance policy.
