Traffic schools are very popular for both new drivers and young drivers however the use of traffic schools to get cheap car insurance rates can sometimes be a little tricky.

Many car insurance companies reward drivers who have completed a defensive driving course but many times these driver education courses must be on an approved list. While some car insurance companies recognize completion of any state approved course others only pass on discounts from courses completed at select schools.

Who should go to Traffic School?

If we had it our way everyone should be required to go to driving school and some people would be given the option of a free metro card for life in lieu of having a drivers license but thats the dream – the reality is anyone can go but only 2 groups of people usually do.

Young Drivers

Young drivers often attend driving schools to prepare for their drivers license test and with hope they can parlay the graduation certificate into lower car insurance premiums. Before attending any traffic school however its important to speak with potential insurers and ask about which schools are approved for a car insurance discount.

The second group is anyone who gets a speeding ticket or other moving violation citation

Although traffic schools and driving schools are sometimes used interchangeable traffic school is more of a refresher course than a driver education course. Almost anyone who has received a speeding ticket certainly has considered attending traffic school.

How much is traffic school?

The cost of traffic school depends on where you live. Some states allow the completion of online courses where others make it mandatory for you to attend in person. Traffic school tuition fees range anywhere from $25 to a couple hundred dollars.

Why attend traffic school after a speeding ticket?

Getting a speeding ticket is never fun and gone are the days where you simply pay a small fine and move on. Fines for speeding tickets have surpassed over $200 in many states and the possible repercussions to your good driver discount can cost you hundreds of dollars in annual car insurance premiums. For first time offenders or drivers with fairly clean driving records its possible to opt for driving school and avoid (a) conviction and (b) points on your driving record. State laws vary about the use of traffic schools and who can use them but without a conviction on your record and no points assessed to your driving record the likelihood of any car insurance company removing your good driver discount is low.

Many drivers also opt to hire a traffic ticket attorney as this is usually much cheaper than attending traffic school and the odds are very favorable your speeding ticket will be thrown out. At the very least it could be months before any decision is made at which you time you may even have the option of opting for traffic school with the court. Delay the pain, play the game kind of option.

The good news is that being ticketed for speeding is not the same as being convicted. There are many options you can take to help avoid a conviction for speeding and with the right choices a single speeding ticket may never affect your car insurance rates.
